Classroom Treat - Christmas 2010

Snowmen on my mind

Aren’t these SUPER cute!

Melted Snowman (LOVE THIS)
I had every intention of making these for my boy’s classmates, but I can honestly say it’s not happening (major bummer). Maybe I will make them next week, for neighborhood friends and family. If you want the how-to's, head over to The Idea Room and Amy will show you!!!

But I did spy these darling marshmallow treats over at eighteen25 and I know that I can definitely make them.

So sugarplums will be dancing in my house over the next few days.

Happy Treat Making To You,

Tutorial - Ornament Wreath

Fun wreath and so easy to make

So how did I make the wreath on my front door?

Here is the tutorial from Eddie Ross. The best thing about this wreath is that it’s super easy to do. Go check it out and then come back and tell me all about the wreath you made ( I just know you will want to make one after you see how simple this is). Go ahead, I'm waiting.

FYI - I bought a package of shatterproof ornaments from Wal-Mart and had my son help me string the ornaments on. Needle nose pliers do make this much easier!

I just need to make a bigger bow to hide the hanger! Anybody know of any good bow making tutorials? I really struggle with making cute bows!

Happy Wreath Making to you,

Megan

Advent

The Countdown Begins

The house is decorated,

the children are super excited,

and the advent calendars

have begun their countdown to Christmas!!!

I love this time of year – the excitement, the opportunities to serve, the food, the decorating, etc… Sometimes I get so caught up in the preparing and doing that I have to remind myself to focus on what is really important. That is why I love advent calendars!

There are many different kinds (and I have several in my house) but my most favorite is the one that I made last year...

Each day, as a family, we read a scripture, do a simple activity together, and sing a Christmas song together.

If you desire to get more out of your holiday season, check out my Christmas posts from last year. Start with day one (December 1st) and follow the simple instructions each day and you will find your focus shifting to the real meaning of the season!

Happy Holidays To You,

Megan

Give Thanks

In Style

Do you have a kids table at your Thanksgiving feast? Depending on where we are feasting there will be a table set aside for the younger ones. I have fond memories as a young girl, sitting with my cousins - coloring; playing games; not having any adults telling me how I ought to sit and eat; and enjoying the yummy food together.

Well, this year we will be having a kids table at our Thanksgiving meal destination and you just have to see this SUPER clever idea I saw over at One Charming Party! (Check out the blog for the how-to's)

I can’t wait to make this for the kiddos this year! Maybe I will make the corn husks for the adults too. So much fun!

Happy Thanksgiving to you,

Halloween Fun

Halloween Fun

We had a fun Halloween celebration! The boys enjoyed parties at their school. As if they didn't have enough treats - we continued the festivities the next evening at our stake center where we enjoyed the annual Trunk or Treat bash!

We were rock stars this year and I will be the first to admit, I just didn’t have it in me to come up with some clever costumes. We do have fun dressing up as a family and this year was no exception (even if the costumes were not so original).

The boys felt like rock stars so that is all that matters!!!

Peanut #3's shirt says "Cry Loud, Rock Hard"

The older boys thought Hud-Nut looked funny in the mullet wig.

Since Halloween fell on a Sunday this year, we didn't go Trick or Treating but we had a great time with a few other families and really enjoyed our Spooky Feast!!! Thanks for the invite (you know who you are ;-)

We filled up on a snake calazone, bloody rats (meatloaf), a puken' pumpkin, newt eyes (deviled eggs), witches fingers, bleeding hearts (red jello cut out in heart shapes - not pictured) and some yummy spider web seven layer dip. We also had delicious desserts (I was too busy eating them to get a picture of them).

After dinner and some time to visit we had fun watching the kiddos have race of eating donuts off a string.
There was no cheating going on here - wink, wink!
The older kids did a good job!!! Big D did win - although he may have used his arm for assistance a time or two.

Each couple raced too (except for my hubby and me - I was seriously gagging watching the others do it, dang gag reflex).

And so that my hubby wouldn't feel left out the men raced him too.

We had a blast and are already looking forward to next year's festivities. But for now we will prepare ourselves for Thanksgiving and Christmas!

Happy Fun Making to you,

Firecracker Craft Project – Kid Friendly

I love the 4th of July! I love our country and we have a good time celebrating all that we are blessed with!!! To help get us in the spirit, we made firecrackers out of toilet paper tubes!!!!
Here’s What You Need:
1 – Toliet Paper Tube
1 – Paper Towel Tube
Scissors
Red, White, and Blue Paint
Paint Brushes
1 - Chenille Stick (whatever color strikes your fancy)
Tape
Ribbon

How To’s:
1.    1. Cut the paper towel tube so that you have 3 tubes at different heights. I cut the paper towel tube to about 4.5” and 5.5”. You won’t need to cut the toilet paper tube.

2.    2.Paint each tube one of the 3 colors. Be sure to paint about an inch down on the inside of the tube (on the side that will be the “top” of the firecracker). Let dry!

3.
3.Cut your chenille stick in half and then take one of the halves and cut that one in half. So you should have 2 smaller pieces and one longer.
4.
4.Attach the longer chenille stick in your tallest tube with tape. You could use a glue gun for this but tape worked for me. It kindof bugged me that I couldn’t put the chenille stick in the center, but I really didn’t want to have to worry about jimmy-rigging the top so that I can center it – so I let it go, that need for perfection!!!!
5.
5.Gather your 3 firecrackers and tie them with your cute ribbon.

6.    6.Ta-Da – you are finished!

Happy Crafting to You and Yours,

Holy Week - Day Eight (Jesus' Resurrection)

Repost from last year! Happy Easter!

Day 8 – Easter Sunday (Jesus’ Resurrection & Appearances)

Prophecy: “He will swallow up death in victory; and the Lord God will wipe away tears from off all faces; and the rebuke of his people shall he take away from off all the earth: for the Lord hath spoken it” (Isaiah 25:8).

Scripture Reading: Matthew 28:1-15; Mark 16:1-12; Luke 24:1-49; John 20:1-23

Family Discussion: Discuss how the apostles reacted to Mary Magdalene’s report that Christ had risen (Mark 16:10-11) and the report of the two men on the road to Emmaus (Mark 16:13). Discuss the Lord’s response to this (Mark 16:14).

Suggested Activities:

  • Play the game “Why do we celebrate Easter?” (listed below)
  • Sing the Resurrection Hymn (“I Know That My Redeemer Lives”)
  • If you made a “LOA” table earlier in the week, read all of the comments aloud.
  • If you chose to participate in a service activity on Day 2, report on the service given.
"Why do we celebrate Easter?"
For a unique presentation of the often heard Easter story, copy and paste the following scriptures into a word document. Then cut them apart and put them in correspondingly numbered platic eggs. Add the appropriate item (in parentheses) except for the 12th egg, which should remain empty.

Serve the eggs in a decorated basket, from an egg carton, or at each place setting at the dinner table. This adds a nice touch to a church lesson, family home evening, or as a gift. Or play a game of “scrambled eggs” by having players match the scriptures to the items, or putting the story in sequence.

1. And he went a little further, and fell on his face, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt. Matthew 26:39; (Sacrament Cup)

2. Then one of the twelve, called Judas Iscariot, went unto the chief priests,, And said unto them, what will you give me, and I will deliver him unto you? And they covenanted with him for thirty pieces of silver. Matthew 26:14-15 This fulfilled the prophecy in Zechariah 11: 12-14 that Jesus would be sold for 30 pieces of silver. (3 dimes)

3. When the morning was come, all the chief priests and elders of the people took counsel against Jesus to put him to death: And when they had bound him, they led him away and delivered him to Pontius Pilate the governor. Matthew 27: 1-2; (knotted twine)

4. When Pilate saw that he could prevail nothing, but that rather a tumult was made, he took water, and washed his hands before the multitude saying, I am innocent of the blood of this just person: see ye to it. Then answered all the people, and said, His blood be on us, and on our children. Then released he Barabbas unto them: and when he had scourged Jesus, he delivered him to be crucified. Matthew 27: 24-26; Do we also wash our hands? (chunk of hand soap)

5. And they stripped him, and put on him a scarlet robe. And when they had platted a crown of thorns, they put it upon his head, and a reed in his right hand: and they bowed the knee before him, and mocked him, saying, Hail, King of the Jews and they spit upon him, and took the reed, and smote him on the head. Matthew 27: 28-30 (square of red velvet)

6. And after that they had mocked him, they took the robe off from him, and put his own raiment on him, and led him away to crucify him. And as they came out, they found a man of Cyrene, Simon by name: him they compelled to bear his cross. Matthew 27: 31-32 And He was crucified… nailed to the cross. (Press this nail into your hand … feel how it must have hurt.) (toothpick cross, tiny nail)

7. And they crucified him, and parted his garments, casting lots: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet… And sitting down they watch him there: Matthew 27: 35-36 (small pair of dice)

8. Jesus, when he had cried again with a loud voice, yielded up the ghost. And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent:. . . Now when the centurion, and they that were with him, watching Jesus, saw the earthquake, and those things that were done, they feared greatly, saying, Truly this was the Son of God. Matthew 27: 50-51 & 54 (tiny bag of crushed rock or potting soil)

9. Then Joseph, a rich man) went to Pilate, and begged the body of Jesus. Then Pilate commanded the body to be delivered. And when Joseph had taken the body, the wrapped it in a clean linen cloth, And laid it in his own new tomb, which he had hewn out in the rock. Matthew 27: 57-60; (strip of white cloth)

10. And he rolled a great stone to the door of the sepulcher, and departed. Pilate said unto them (the chief priests and Pharisees), Ye have a watch; go your way, make it as sure as ye can. So they went, and made the sepulcher sure, sealing the stone, and setting a watch. Matthew 27: 60, 65-66; (a stone)

11. And when the Sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, and Mary, the mother of James, and Salome, had bought sweet spices, that they might come and anoint him. / And, behold, there was a great earthquake; for the angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone from the door, and sat upon it. And the angel . . . said unto the women, Fear not ye: for I know that ye seek Jesus, which was crucified. Mark 16:1, Matthew 28: 2 and 5; (bay leaf, cloves or other herb)

12. Then the angels said unto the women, “Fear no ye; for I know that ye seek Jesus, which was crucified. He is not here, for he is risen.” Matthew 28:6; (empty)

Holy Week - Day Seven (The Jewish Sabbath)

Repost from last year - a day early if you needed it!

Day 7 – Saturday (The Jewish Sabbath)

Scripture Reading: Matthew 27:62-66; Luke 23:56

Family Discussion: Discuss Jewish Sabbath (shabbat) observance compared to our own. (Here is a link to the wikipedia entry for shabbat).

Suggested Activities:

  • Taste the difference between water and vinegar.
  • Turn out all the lights for the evening to signify the three hours of darkness in the Old World and the three days in the New World (see Matthew 27:45; 3 Nephi 8:20-23).
